Low Downer

Back again – no fanfares or bunting hung, just the celebratory strains of Joy Orbison ‘s “Hyph Mngo” ringing us in. All fever pitched and heart-slow, this is strange synthetic fruit for a scurvied and sick near future, paradisal produce from a dub dreamt black tropic, trippy power-up vitamins for the beat courageous and week weary, a smoke sent Saturday night siren to follow to the tireless middle of everything.
We’re a little bit tardy on this one, regular readers of No Pain In Pop (and that should be everyone with a wireless connection/clean conscience) will be well aware of Londoner Peter O’Grady’s shadowy, hypnotic and soul-wielding production work by now and indeed that of many of his contemporaries, but couldn’t let it slide by without adding our own little spit-shone two cents to the furore steadily mounting around the jam and JO’s forthcoming debut Hot Flush release on which it sits princely. Otherworldly and isolated but still resolutely human sounding, this record is the real deal Holyfield and alongside producers such as Mount Kimbie , and Pariah is at the forefront of something pretty exciting right now.

If you’re feeling this, you may want to head down to the party Young Turks are hosting at The Lock Tavern this evening where Mount Kimbie and The xx will be throwing all sorts of chopped ‘n’ screwed hammers ‘till late.
Finally, The xx are set to release their debut LP on August 17 and it looks set to be a masterclass in kohl-eyed, murky pop minimalism. Check out this stark, stairwell-romantic remix of lead single “Basic Space” by the aforementioned Pariah and be sure to cop the disc when time rolls around.
