Incoming 2010 - Mountain Man

Perhaps it befits their understated simplicity and scent-throwing name that we haven’t been banging on about Vermont’s all female trio Mountain Man, but privately we’ve been listening to little other than their beautiful and brittle seven-song album for the past few months. It’s a small slice of warm, lucid, bedsitting harmonies and the new version of ‘Mouthwings’ below is a glimpse of what we can expect to hear when ‘Sun Dog’ hits in January through the infallible Underwater Peoples. If you still needed any convincing they also happen to be the sweetest people in the world.

Favourite Song of 2009?

Amelia: Animal Collective – Summertime Clothes

Molly: Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy – Wolf Among Wolves

Alex: I haven’t been listening to too much new music. I really like the song “Searchin’,” as recorded by Wanda Jackson, but that was several years ago.

Favourite Album of 2009?

Amelia: Bill Callahan – Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle

Bill Callahan – Eid Ma Clack Shaw

Molly: Laura Nyro and Labelle – It’s Gonna Take A Miracle – not from 2009 but my favorite of this year.
Alex: Willie Nelson – Red Headed Stranger.

What are your plans for 2010?

Amelia: Graduate collegeland, go to Iceland, learn how to cook for myself (something other than bread, cheese and avocado) and remember to be an animal as well as a human.
Alex: To find wherever it is that there is an endless summer.
Molly: Kill the ego, yo. Among other things.

Can you tell us a little about the track you’ve sent us?

Amelia: Mouthwings is about being safe and sad and a mother.
Molly: Amelia wrote Mouthwings, when I sing it I imagine that it is about an adventure full of caves that look like the tops of mouths, and finding safety in the things you “create” but are not your own.
