Brooklyn’s highest priests of party Psychobuildings return to righteously bodypop their way through some more illusory, luminous sci-fi cityscapes with the agitated, fitting paranoid-pop of “Portraits.” Peter LaBier’s frazzled flood-of-consciousness mutter sounds weirdly composed this time around, brilliantly lobotomised like some sort of cyborg coin-op soul singer amidst a dizzying flurry of lazer-guided synths and knife-edge horrorflick atmospherics. There are definite touchpoints here – the sillhouettes of all your favourite black-eyed eighties doom-merchants stalk the jam’s corridors – but there’s an energy and anxiety that is all PB’s own, LaBier a beautiful bug-eyed fugitive in a hall of mirrors of all his own conjuring.
